about

FHTAGN! An Abhorrent Album of Lovecraftian Loathsomeness is Mayhem Lettuce's interpretation of H.P. Lovecraft's classic tale of cosmic horror - The Call of Cthulhu. Clocking in at just over 20 minutes, this album is more short story than novel, which we feel is fitting for such an adaptation.

For this album, we deliberately altered our approach to song-writing, aiming for a looser, more ambient, witchy sound than is typical for us. This album is moodier, darker, and more ethereal than previous outings with a focus on texture and rhythm over melody. The result is a collection of dreamy, experimental pieces of drastically varied lengths that flow together sonically and thematically.

In Lovecraft's story, the narrator is piecing together fragments of information - newspaper clippings, journal entries, dream diaries of madmen - in an attempt to understand the occult activities his dead uncle was investigating. This album is similarly fragmentary and elusive, offering just enough pieces of the puzzle that your mind can fill in the gaps and just begin to make out the big picture.

A word that pops up over and over in his investigation of the Cthulhu cult is "fhtagn" which means "dreaming". Cthulhu is a cosmic entity who lies "dead but dreaming" beneath the ocean. His dreams spill out and, as the stars begin to align, he psychically alters the dreams of people all over the globe. Some who receive these visions go mad; others begin to worship him. Many do both. It is this aspect of the story - this notion that a malevolent alien intelligence can invade the dreams of humans - that we explore in this album.

We acknowledge that H.P. Lovecraft was a problematic person in life and do not condone his racist views. We hope you can join us in separating the man from the art and enjoy our take on his classic short story about a worldwide conspiracy of cultists, an ancient monster from beyond the stars, and the power of dreams to shape our lives... or drive us to madness!

Turn down your lights (where applicable) and dream with us in the dark.

about

Mayhem Lettuce Port Byron, Illinois

Mayhem Lettuce was formed in Port Byron, IL in 1993 when two sad teenage boys decided to channel their angst into music.
That music sits at the crossroads of King Missile and Portishead with a dash of The Cure and a pinch of They Might Be Giants.
